Taboo-Breaking Photo Series Celebrates Later-In-Life Sex

Even though older people have great sex, they are often excluded from sexual narratives. A new photography campaign is aiming to celebrate and dismantle the stigma of sex-after-a-certain-age. Five older couples were photographed by a world-renowned British photographer for the campaign, called Let’s Talk The Joy of Later Life Sex. By talking about sex and intimacy for people over the age of 60, the campaign aims to challenge the idea that older people can’t and wouldn’t want to have sex.

Two thirds of polled over-65s say sex and intimacy for their age group is rarely or never represented in the media. “In reality, ‘sex and intimacy in later life’ means different things to different people: for some it’s about exploring new and different sexual experiences, and for others it’s simply about feeling able to express emotion through a gentle touch or kiss on the cheek,” a sex therapist involved in the campaign explained. They added that the campaign is trying to open up a societal conversation about the fact that sex and intimacy, in all its forms, “can be as important for older people as it is for anyone else.”

A sex therapist in Utah who has publicly challenged her faith’s policies on sexuality has been kicked out of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints following a disciplinary hearing. “After carefully and prayerfully considering this matter,” the letter states, “it was the decision of the council to withdraw your church membership in response to conduct contrary to the law and order of the church.” The withdrawal of a person’s membership by church leaders amounts to the harshest punishment available for a member of the faith—it used to be called excommunication.

The sex therapist has been outspoken on sexual issues and supports same-sex marriage, counsels that masturbation is not a sin and says pornography should not be treated as an addiction. Church members are taught not to have sex before marriage, engage in passionate kissing, touch another person sexually, or arouse “emotions in your own body” that are supposed to be reserved for marriage. Gay sex is also forbidden even if a person is married or in a relationship.

Brennan Hart III has registered a PAC called the American Business Federation recently. Hart was the focus of a General Services Administration inspector general report that said he admitted to receiving oral sex from a White House staffer on the GSA rooftop.

“He stated he escorted [the White House staffer] into the GSA Central Office building and made them each a drink with the bottle of vodka he kept in his desk,” the report said. “He said their sexual activity began in the Administrator suite area and culminated with oral sex on the rooftop of the Central Office.” According to the government, “Having sex in the central office building is not an authorized purpose for use by the public,” adding “there is no law or GSA regulation that allows an employee to have sex in the building,” the documents said.
