Study Finds Most Straight Women are Turned on By Naked Men and Women

best_phone_sex_niteflirt_sexhoursA new study is further evidence that sexual identifications like straight, gay, and bi are complex and muddy terms. The study found that most straight women are aroused by images of both naked men and women. “Eighty-two percent of the female participants—and 74 percent of the women who identify as straight—exhibited arousal to both sexes,” Slate reported. So is this proof that women cannot be straight?

Well, not exactly. In scientific terms, an attraction to both genders does technically mean that you’d be considered bi-sexual. But this definition only takes into account one’s sexual identification, not one’s romantic identification. In other words, bi-sexual people are not only attracted to both sexes, but they’d want to date both sexes. While straight women might become aroused by seeing naked images of both sexes (which is largely a physiological response because of the way women’s brains are wired), they don’t necessarily want to act on their feelings of sexual desire. Mainly, this study shows how slippery and confusing sexual orientation can be—and how sexually versatile women are!

Couples Who Sext Are Having the Best Sex

SextingLet’s face it, since sexting is basically only discussed in scandalous news stories, it’s gotten a bad rap. But what if we told you that sexting among consenting adults has many benefits? A new study presented at the American Psychological Association proves that the couples who sext together stay together—because they’re having the best sex!

In a survey that asked 870 participants aged 18 to 82 about their sexting habits, a staggering 82 percent of the people reported sexting within the last year. And the adults who engaged in consensual sexting were happier sexually and with their relationship in general. The psychologists who led the study think this is because sexting is a form of communication that benefits both men and women: men prefer visual stimuli while women respond to the positive reinforcement of knowing that they’re desired. The psychologists are hopeful that with more research into the benefits of sexting, it could eventually be used in couple’s therapy to promote more communication and intimacy between partners. As one researcher said, “sexting can be good.”

Sexual Fetish Research Shows the Endlessness of Erotic Desire

sexy-scientistResearchers have come a long way since 2004 when they first attempted to catalogue human’s seemingly endless sexual fetishes. Back then, the most common fetishes involved body parts, namely feet and toes, followed by body fluids (blood, urine, etc.), then body types (tall, short, fat, to name a few). The research also documented objects that go on the body—stockings, shoes, skirts and, of course, the most popular, underwear. The most shocking fetishes recorded then probably had to do with catheters and pacemakers…we’ll let you use your imagination.

But now, psychiatrists have taken on the monumental task of attempting to record all of the sexual fetishes in the world in order to include them in the ever evolving Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). In the latest DSM released in 2010, the focus turned to Paraphilia, or “the experience of intense sexual arousal to atypical objects, situations, or individuals.” Before doctors understood that paraphilia fetishes were just a kinky sexual preference, people called these fetishists “perverts” or “sexual deviants.” These days, researchers just want to understand fetishes like Dacryphilia (a BDSM variant whereby sexual enjoyment or arousal is gained from tears and crying) to record and try to make sense of all the endless ways people express erotic desire.

Study Finds (Just the Right Amount of) Sex Will Make You Happy

best_phone_sex_niteflirt_havingsexThe link between sex and happiness has been well established. Like that famous study which found that increasing the frequency of sex from once a month to once a week increased happiness to the same extent as having an extra $50,000 in the bank! But as it turns out, this study and others like it are missing a very important piece to the sex/happiness theory: what’s more important, quantity or quality? A new study conducted at Carnegie Mellon University sought to answer this.

The study asked 64 straight couples to double the amount they fucked each week and then to fill out a series of questionnaires ranking how happy they were. What the study found, somewhat surprisingly, was that more sex did not equal more happiness—in fact, the participants were less happy, especially in terms of the quality of the sex and their energy and enthusiasm. One of the study’s researchers, Dr. Loewenstein, had this piece of advice as the takeaway for the experiment: concentrate on quality rather than quantity if you want to increase your happiness. It’s about pleasure, not frequency; those who like the sex they’re having will want to have it more, which will (obviously) help their mood.
