I feel fairly certain that my bio is not going to follow any sort of usual path here. I say that because my name is Helen and I’m an aspiring opera singer.

People often ask me what drew me to singing opera and the truth is somewhat muddled. I love singing, period. Talented composers write music and I am the vessel who supplies audiences with the final version of that composition. I absolutely love that my vocal interpretations of notes on a page can create magic. However, my voice is incredibly big and broad, so it was a natural fit for opera. I always tell people that it’s like a 7’0” tall man who loves to play sports gravitating towards basketball. My passion was there well before the arena was determined!

One element of opera that I’ve really grown to appreciate is the challenge of trying to express curiosity, love or even sincerity through sound. Love is the greatest challenge of all, because in order to understand love, you have to understand loss as well. A certain genuineness is necessary to capture the proper feeling and express it in song and I love that challenge.

I’m 28 now and, although that’s a little late in the game to be trying to act, it’s incredibly young for opera. I’ve spent the last few years working in the corporate world in management and building up my musical experience and education. I didn’t enjoy the corporate part of that at all. I accepted the nature of the work, but didn’t want to continue any longer. So I moved to Chicago in the fall of 2019 in order to pursue my operatic dreams.

I’ve always kind of been reserved in real life. For whatever reason, I have put up a bit of a shell. Interestingly, when I’m on stage performing, I feel like that’s who I really am. I’m a completely different woman when I’m singing and I love that I can be free to be me. Marrying those two parts of my personality is an on-going effort.

I think the same could be said of my sexuality. I wasn’t particularly confident in a lot of what I was doing when I was in my twenties, but am now open to a lot more things. I wasn’t able to squirt then, but now can do that! I’ve noticed that I am able to get comfortable with people a lot faster than I used to, which means I can get to wonderful places a lot faster as well!
